A broken system

Day 16 of a 30-day series originally published for Facebook April 2021. This post was a little difficult to republish in blog format because it linked a separate Facebook post. I’ve quoted the post below.

I had planned to talk about autism “treatment” in terms of medical care vs advocacy... but 1. I’m giving myself a little grace today and 2. I read this post and everything about it just seemed more important.

17,694.

That’s what number we are on the waitlist for services from the state for our son.
We got on the list in 2009.

Let that sink in.

We’ve already been waiting 12 years.

Literally since the moment we felt something wasn’t quite right.

He will be well into adulthood before we ever come up on the list.

Texas is ranked dead last in disability services. It’s literally 50th out of all 50 states.

The resources and therapies until then are outrageously expensive.

Even with insurance.

Even if you work a decent job.

The financial burden is enough to bury you in a lifetime of debt.

17,694.

How is it that every other state in this nation has found a solution to this problem?
