Autistic Voices

Day 19 of a 30-day series originally published for Facebook April 2021

One of the most powerful ways to support Autistic individuals is to listen, and accept their experience as they have described it. Real talk: I’m still in the “awareness” phase of accepting the reflections on ABA from adult autistics. In my humble perspective, autistic adults can be particularly brutal when they speak about parents of autistic kids and it’s hard to hear.

That said, I’ve chosen a few accounts that I follow on Instagram that I’ve found incredibly informative and I appreciate the perspective they provide me. Two are personal accounts run by autistic teens, and one is an account focused on understanding autistics in the workplace.

I’m speaking about autism this month, but it goes without saying that understanding, kindness, and empathy are all things we as a society fall FAR short on. What is known, is not feared, but is understood. So the first step is to know. I hope you’ll check these accounts out.

The graphic is from aspieselfcare about Autism in teens an adults. It says 70% of youth live with mental health issues, 67% of autistic teens have been bullied, 50% of autistics over 25 have never had a job, suicide is 3x more likely in autistic teen
